The chawan was created by Japanese ceramicist Tozan Mori (b. 1938), a leading figure in Bizen-yaki ceramics. He comes from a traditional family of potters that belongs to one of the main lineages of Bizen-yaki.

His works typically highlight the natural effects of fire and clay characteristic of Bizen ware.
